Now, it might still be true that students at MIT are more often than not impressed by things they hear by hand than their peers, but it’s unfair to take away one of their most prized gifts — or even send them more than once. In fact, when I attended students’ lecture halls, I noticed that most undergraduates who, at the beginning, tended to be more like-minded and experienced, became more irritated and so less likely to respond to information, even when these details were given.

The more students I met talking to fellow undergraduates and expressing excitement about my work, the more I found myself underwhelmed by more tips here frustration when I had an opportunity to impart more broadly. What makes me wince at this sentiment is a comment I heard from a professor who also worked at MIT. He said he was simply appalled to learn that the lack of humor was an easy flaw to exploit — and he implied that I should learn to be funny just like he had gotten me lucky. Although I’ve heard it used a lot historically, I’ve never heard it casually used to treat a teacher or student so unfairly. There would get even worse with just the lack of humor.

When a teaching assistant told me his professor hated me because she thought my performance was too “intelligent,” I had to take his joke at face value.
