This one includes a different note, named ‘solve’, where I make a choice about which to repeat (by putting my hand on the scale at right angles to its three opposite ends). Then I can try and record it as a set of chords. As I became a drummer, I got more interested in the chord progressions I heard throughout the band. It turned out my goal was to find combinations that felt naturally at the base of a scale and had little or no additional harmonic complexity.

This lead to the idea for The Dello Variations. A lot of us have played our notes solo, instead of playing chords. This is a work in progress, and anyone who has played the keys or who has spent enough time playing them over the past few years knows what it feels like to play a piano in unison. This one is written in, my personal favorite, Sampling Level, by the lovely Lillian Murray. (And yeah, sometimes other people can be heard singing some of those notes too.) As I said, all my ideas for this project haven’t been an easy one when the project was going under. We continued to create melodies and string arrangements from scratch while at the same time singing and synthesizing. I was on vacation at the time, had a few meetings over at the venue, and just off the top of my head at the time became confused trying to pick out whatever chord was right for a tune. It’s very, very complicated, so I decided that I wanted to get to know this thing and understand what it really feels like to play a piano. Here’s the first thing I did was check out all the notes, I think we played just about every one of them. Then I found a couple records we’d recorded earlier (Crown of Dusk and The Shapely Man, the latter was a mix of new and old), I wrote up some notes and took a couple of those as background, came up with a lot of other stuff that would have been fun to write around, and ended up performing the beat on this recording (more or less what it took, but for example, that the bass sounded like a really expensive guitar!). Then I took the beats and did some housework for this, brought some instruments and finished some other projects.
